Beyond the Label: The 13 Disability Categories Explained
Available spots
Service Description
Understanding special education eligibility can feel overwhelming, especially when parents encounter unfamiliar disability categories, educational terminology, and different requirements for receiving services. In this one-hour class, parents will gain an understanding of the 13 disability categories recognized under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), including their general characteristics and how Florida identifies and names disability categories through Exceptional Student Education (ESE). Participants will explore the difference between a medical diagnosis and educational eligibility, how evaluation information helps determine eligibility, and why a disability category does not automatically determine a child's services, supports, or educational placement. Through practical examples, parents will gain a clearer understanding of the eligibility process and learn questions they can ask to help ensure educational decisions reflect their child's individual strengths and needs.
